Aquil Reshamvala

I met Aquil in my days at International House in Brisbane. Like many Indians I know, he's loud and exuberant, full of energy for life and capable of passing that energy onto anyone nearby. Some people get to know Aquil as his patients, going under the knife in his dental surgery, but fortunately for me, I got to know him through dance. Aquil's arrival at International House in 1997 heralded the start of an era of Indian dance performances that continues even today. The tradition developed around our college festival, Soiree, and a small group of people who stayed on at IH for several years. For Aquil and I, the highlight came at the inaugural inter-college Dancefest in 2001, where our efforts were rewarded with a couple of top honours. It wasn't long after that that we both left Australia. I remember all the hard work he put in to finish his dentistry masters. I continue to think about him as he's back home in Bombay, working hard to take care of his family. And I won't forget that he gave me a love of dance that will stay with me all my life. I promised I'd visit Aquil in Bombay. I will, mate. Soon.
